“Don’t Blink …”

“Cause when your hourglass runs out of sand … you can’t flip it over and start again.” -Kenny Chesney
I never cease to be amazed at the power of some of the moments in our lives. A few weeks ago, I was at my son’s wedding and the traditional Mother-Son dance unfolded to Kenny Chesney’s beautiful song, “Don’t Blink.” Over the next several minutes I was absolutely awestruck and mesmerized by the beautiful scene unfolding before me. A mother dancing with her son for a few brief moments while a lifetime of memories must have cascaded before both of them. The smiles on their faces conveyed the powerful love between them and the subtle message they both understood. “It was all worth it.”
Life is a series of such recollections, each passing by in the blink of an eye. From the time we are born to the time we take our last breath, our days are filled with fleeting moments that shape our experiences, memories, and ultimately, our lives. The phrase “don’t blink” serves as a reminder of just how quickly time slips away from us. It reminds us to savor every moment, to be present in the here and now, because before we know it, that moment will be gone forever.
As children, we eagerly anticipate the future, always looking forward to the next big milestone – graduating high school, getting a job, starting a family. But as we grow older, we begin to realize just how quickly time passes us by. The days turn into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months into years, leaving us wondering where the time has gone.
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, constantly chasing after the next big thing. But in our relentless pursuit of success, we often forget to take a step back and appreciate the beauty in life’s small moments. The way the sun sets over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the world. The sound of laughter shared between friends. The feeling of a loved one’s embrace. These are the moments that make life truly meaningful. These are the moments that we should hold onto tightly, for they are the ones that make life worth living.
But just as quickly as these moments come, they also go. And before we know it, they are nothing more than distant memories, fading with time. Life is fragile, and we never know what the future holds. One moment we may be celebrating a joyous occasion, and the next we may be facing a tragedy. It is in these moments of hardship that we realize just how precious life truly is, and how quickly it can be taken away from us.
So, as 2026 arrives and we continue to navigate through life’s unpredictable and unscheduled ups and downs – let’s remember to cherish every moment, no matter how big or small. Let us take the time to appreciate the beauty in the world around us, to show gratitude for the people we love, and to live each day as if it were our last.
Because, in the end, all of our lives can be condensed down to those precious few moments that distinguish who we are and how we lived. It’s not the material possessions or the achievements that matter, but those unforgettable events that allow us to forever reminisce upon them. So, don’t blink. Don’t let life pass you by in a blur of missed opportunities and forgotten moments. Take the time to stop and smell the roses, to watch the sunset, and to embrace the ones you hold dear.
“Time moves slowly … but passes quickly.” -Alice Walker
