“No One Thrives Alone”

“Community is about much more than belonging to something; it’s about
doing something together that makes belonging matter.” -Brian Solis

I made a rather shocking discovery on the first few months of my retirement as I was traveling around and living in different cities. The excitement of the travel was quickly hollowed out with the realization that, disconnected from my community – happiness, contentment, and satisfaction became a much harder proposition to achieve. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy traveling and I didn’t sit around moping – but there was an unanticipated emptiness that came with being cut off from my lifelong network of all manner of community back home in Denver.

We often measure success by what we accomplish on our own. We celebrate independence, self-reliance, discipline, and personal achievement. We work hard to build careers, improve our health, grow our savings, and pursue our goals. These are all worthwhile pursuits. But somewhere along the way, many of us forget one of life’s most fundamental truths: No one thrives alone.

Human beings are wired for connection. From the moment we are born until our final days, our greatest joys and our deepest sorrows are almost always shared with other people. Our happiest memories are rarely about possessions or accomplishments. They are about family dinners, neighborhood gatherings, lifelong friendships, conversations over coffee, cheering from the sidelines, lending a helping hand, and simply knowing someone cares whether we show up tomorrow.

Community is far more than the place where we live. It is the web of relationships that gives our life meaning. It is the people who celebrate our victories without envy and stand beside us when life knocks us to our knees. It is the church congregation, the pickleball group, the volunteer organization, the cycling club, the neighborhood barbecue, or the weekly breakfast with old friends. Community reminds us that we belong to something larger than ourselves. I routinely have coffee and meals with friends I’ve known for over 60-years.

Ironically, we live in one of the most connected times in history, yet loneliness has become one of our greatest public health challenges. We can exchange hundreds of text messages in a day and still feel isolated. We can scroll through endless social media feeds and still long for a genuine conversation. Technology is a wonderful tool, but it can never replace the warmth of shared laughter, a handshake, a hug, or a friend who looks you in the eye and asks, “How are you really doing?”

Research consistently shows what our hearts already know. Strong social relationships are associated with better physical health, lower rates of depression, improved cognitive function, greater resilience during difficult times, and even longer lives. Community doesn’t merely make life more enjoyable; it makes us stronger. It gives us perspective when we lose it, encouragement when we need it, and purpose when we begin to wonder whether we still matter.

As we grow older, community becomes even more valuable. Retirement may free our calendars, but it can also quietly shrink our daily interactions. Children move away. Careers end. Friends relocate. Without intention, isolation can creep into our lives almost unnoticed. The antidote isn’t simply staying busy. It’s staying connected. My Denver spider-web of intricate, intimate, and lifelong connections is like a spiritual IV in my arm!

In the end, a fulfilling life is measured by much more than what we accumulate. It is measured by the relationships we nurture, the people we encourage, and the communities we help strengthen. The richest lives are rarely built in isolation. They are built shoulder to shoulder, conversation by conversation, act of kindness by act of kindness, and coffee by coffee.

Because at every stage of life—from our first steps to our last—one truth will always remain unchanged:

No one … thrives alone.

“Friendship also seems to be the bond
that holds communities together.”  -Aristotle
